The history of FESTIVAL MOZART
Nearly 180 concerts & 130 guest musicians since 1996
Created in 1996 with the support of the Municipality of Waterloo, Festival Mozart is a residency festival, a rare and unique concept in Belgium. A remarkable number of international artists stay in residence in Waterloo throughout the Festival, sharing meals, rehearsals and the stage at almost every concert.
The founders of the Festival, who also served as its Artistic Directors from 1996 to 2008, are pianist Dalia Ouziel, violinist Jerrold Rubenstein and violist Vladimir Mendelssohn.
Since 2009, the artistic direction has been led by violinist, violist and pianist Daniel Rubenstein.
Since 2012, the Festival has expanded its activities by introducing individual Masterclasses open to young musicians, as well as a Young Artists Program, which selects promising young musicians to perform in ensembles alongside the Festival musicians. Exhibitions have also become part of the Festival, making it not only a major musical event, but also a place for artistic and cultural encounters.
In 2023, Festival Mozart presented its first edition in Japan, in Waterloo’s twin city of Nagakute, at the invitation of the municipality and the Nagakute Cultural Centre, as well as in Yokohama and Tokyo under the auspices of the Embassy of Belgium.
